Omer Celik, spokesman for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) made a statement:

Our president has many times stated that we want to become a BRICS member… The process is now under way.

The term BRIC was originally coined in the early 2000s as investor shorthand for the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. In 2009, these four nations established the BRIC international forum. A year later, South Africa joined, expanding the group to BRICS. At the beginning of 2024, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates also joined. The group views itself as a counterweight to the US and the Western-led global order.

In June, Erdogan stated that he does not see BRICS membership as a substitute for participation in other groups. Turkey also officially remains a candidate for European Union membership.
