Hours after Israel announced the killing of 64-year-old Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah confirmed his death on Saturday, September 28th. The Iran-backed group stated that its leader “has joined his fellow martyrs”. Hezbollah also pledged to “continue the holy war against the enemy and in support of Palestine”. The announcement has heightened fears that a regional war is now inevitable.
On Friday evening, September 27th, Israel launched a massive airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs, claiming it was aimed at Hezbollah’s leader. The strike leveled at least six residential buildings. Nasrallah had largely stayed out of the public eye since 2006. He became Hezbollah’s secretary-general in 1992 at the age of 32, following the assassination of his predecessor, Abbas al-Musawi, in an Israeli helicopter attack.
