South Korea’s constitutional court has started impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk-yeol. The case follows a parliamentary vote to remove him over his brief and chaotic imposition of martial law. The court has six months to decide whether to dismiss Yoon from office or reinstate him.

On Saturday, South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach Yoon for imposing martial law earlier in December. Yoon had announced the measure in a surprise televised address, describing it as essential to combat “anti-state forces.” The order was overturned when MPs broke into the closed parliament in Seoul to vote against it.

Yoon and his People’s Power Party (PPP) have been struggling with the political fallout. Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Seoul, demanding Yoon’s arrest.
