Russia proposed to the United States that both nations hold discussions on Iran’s nuclear program, Iran International reports on March 5th.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking to reporters, referred to last month’s talks between Russia and the US in Riyadh:

The topic of Iran was on agenda, it was touched upon but not in detail. We suggested making it a separate subject of our dialogue and our consultations in the future. Russia’s position is that the issue of Iran’s nuclear dossier needs to be solved only through political and diplomatic means. Russia is ready to do everything possible for it.

Moscow and Tehran signed a strategic cooperation treaty in January, aiming to further strengthen their growing ties.

Russia has used Iranian-made drones in its war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Iran has sought closer economic and military relations with Moscow to counter US-led sanctions.

President Donald Trump’s attempts could open the door for greater cooperation with Vladimir Putin, who has offered to use his influence in Tehran to mediate between Iran and the US.

Bloomberg reported that Russia has agreed to help Washington communicate with Iran on various matters, including its backing of regional groups opposed to the US.

Russian officials have not confirmed the report. Since 2022, Iran has accelerated its nuclear program, enriching uranium to near weapons-grade levels while limiting access for international inspectors.
