Qatar and Spain: New Initiatives Focused on Arabic and Andalusian Studies.

Qatar has announced the creation of the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Chair for Teaching Arabic Language and Andalusian Heritage at the University of Granada, Spain, Middle East Monitor reports on June 24th.

This initiative aims to enhance Arabic language education and promote Andalusian studies, providing scholarships for Arabic language studies at Qatar University for the 2024-2025 academic year, according to the Doha News.

The announcement was made during the inaugural Qatar-Spain Strategic Dialogue, attended by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. This dialogue also introduced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries.

Notably, Qatar Foundation and the Albeniz Foundation have reached an agreement to create a Research Chair in Arabic and Eastern Music at the Reina Sofia School of Music.

Earlier this month, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA) held a conference in collaboration with Casa Árabe in Madrid, focusing on the influence of “Arabian Nights” in Spain. Titled “Arabian Nights: A Cultural Journey across Continents and Centuries,” the event featured prominent speakers discussing the tales’ impact on Spanish culture. The conference concluded with a concert by Lebanese artist Abeer Nehme, celebrating the long-standing cultural ties between Spain and the Arab world.
