Iran’s snap elections, following the tragic passing of President Ebrahim Raisi, are marked by significant anticipation, Tehran Times reports on June 28th. Scheduled to conclude at 6:00 p.m., the voting period is expected to be extended under the Interior Ministry’s guidance. Over 61 million eligible voters are poised to participate.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei set the tone early, emphasizing the crucial role of public participation in upholding the Islamic Republic. He cast his vote at the onset of polling, stressing that the system’s endurance and global standing hinge on robust civic engagement. Urging a robust turnout, Ayatollah Khamenei underscored the election’s pivotal importance for the nation.

The presidential race features four prominent contenders: Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Saeed Jalili, representing conservative factions; Masoud Pezeshkian, aligning with reformists; and Mostafa Pourmohammadi, advocating centrist policies.

Ahead of the elections, Tehran mayor Alireza Zakani and former MP Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi withdrew their candidacies, consolidating the field for a closely watched electoral outcome.
