By 2022, Google had introduced 24 new languages using “zero-shot” machine translation, a method where a machine learning model translates into a new language without having seen any examples. Google also announced the “1,000 Languages Initiative” a commitment to develop AI models that will support the 1,000 most spoken languages worldwide, as Google recalls.
“We are now leveraging AI to broaden the range of supported languages,” the company announced in an online post.
Thanks to our powerful PaLM 2 language model, we are rolling out 110 new languages to Google Translate, our largest expansion to date, including Portuguese from Portugal.
This means Google Translate will now distinguish between the Portuguese variants of Portugal and Brazil.
