Georgia’s newly elected president affirmed the country’s aspiration to join the EU, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding national values, Anadolu Agency reports on December 16th.
In interview with Imedi TV, Mikheil Kavelashvili discussed Georgia-EU relations and the protests sparked by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s recent decision to delay EU accession talks for four years.
Defending Kobakhidze’s decision, Kavelashvili denied that Georgia had paused its EU integration, insisting the country is simply demanding mutual respect from the bloc.

He accused the EU of making unfair decisions against Tbilisi and applying double standards, calling for greater transparency and respect in relations:
We have a clear, long-term plan for the EU, which we consistently uphold and share with the public. We openly state our ambition to join the EU. This is the declared will of the state, and we all agree on it. However, we also have national interests that align with the EU and will not abandon them.
