Georgian painter and architect Zurab Tsereteli passes away at 91

Zurab Tsereteli, the Georgian-Russian sculptor, painter and architect, died in Moscow on April 22nd. He was 91 years old.

Tsereteli was born in Tbilisi in 1934. He became widely known during the Soviet era for his large – scale and often controversial public artworks. He served as Art Director for the Soviet Foreign Ministry and as Chief Designer for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

He graduated from the Tbilisi Art Academy in 1958. One of his most recognised works is the Saint George Monument at Freedom Square in Tbilisi.

Other major works include the 98-meter Peter the Great statue in Moscow, the “Tear of Grief” monument in New Jersey dedicated to 9/11 victims and the “Chronicle of Georgia” monument in Tbilisi.

Tsereteli led the Russian Academy of Arts from 1997 until his death. He was also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
