EU Commissioner denies threatening Georgia’s prime minister

Olivér Várhelyi says his comments about Slovakian PM Robert Fico were taken out of context. This follows claims by the “Georgian Dream” leader that it was part of a conspiracy, Politico reports on May, 23rd.

The EU’s enlargement chief accused Georgia’s prime minister of distorting his words after the PM accused him of intimidation. Tensions between the EU and Georgia are high as Georgia pushes for a Russia-style law labeling some EU-funded NGOs and media outlets as “foreign agents.”

On Thursday, Irakli Kobakhidze claimed on Facebook that his government is facing “abusive blackmail” from the West and said a senior EU official hinted he could face the same fate as Slovak PM Robert Fico, who was shot earlier this month.
