Iranian Court Issues Death Sentence to Pop Star Tataloo

An Iranian court has reportedly sentenced popular singer Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, known as Tataloo, to death on appeal, Guardian reports on January 19th. The verdict follows his conviction for blasphemy, according to local media reports.

According to the reformist newspaper Etemad, “The supreme court upheld the prosecutor’s objection” to an earlier five-year prison sentence for offenses including blasphemy.

The report stated that “the case was reopened, and this time the defendant received a death sentence for insulting the prophet”, referring to Prophet Muhammad of Islam.

It also noted that the verdict is not final and remains subject to appeal.

The 37-year-old underground musician had been residing in Istanbul since 2018 before being extradited to Iran by Turkish police in December 2023.
