The Nikkei newspaper reported that Iwaya would be the first Japanese Cabinet member to attend a U.S. presidential inauguration. Neither Japan’s embassy in Washington nor Trump’s inauguration team immediately responded to requests for comment.

According to a source, the Japanese foreign minister will convey Tokyo’s desire for an early meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Ishiba had unsuccessfully attempted to arrange a meeting in November, shortly after Trump defeated Joe Biden in his presidential comeback.
