Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, has announced a suspension of the country’s EU membership application process until the end of 2028. The move comes in response to criticism from the European Parliament. It condemned Georgia’s parliamentary elections held on October 26. The elections were described as neither free nor fair.

In a statement, Kobakhidze emphasized that Georgia is a European nation, asserting that “It is our duty to make Georgia a full -fledged member of the European family”. However, he added, “Georgia-EU relations are mutual and must remain exclusively bilateral”.

We are a proud and self-respecting nation with a long history. Therefore, it is categorically unacceptable for us to consider integration into the European Union as a favour that the European Union should grant us.
