Georgia: The Ruling Georgian Dream Party Secures Election Victory

Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party won Saturday’s parliamentary election, receiving more than 54% of the vote, Deutsche Welle reports on October 27th. The Central Electoral Commission announced the results on Sunday, October 27th.

The result is a setback for Georgians who want closer ties with the EU. The Georgian Dream party is seen as favoring Russia over the West, despite its claims to the contrary.

Pro-European opposition parties have rejected the preliminary results. They have also announced plans to protest.

On Sunday, October 27th, jailed former President Mikheil Saakashvili, founder of the opposition United National Movement, joined them in calling for mass protests.
