China’s Xi Jinping and India’s Narendra Modi, along with other global leaders, have arrived in the Russian city of Kazan, Al Jazeera reports on October 22nd. They are attending a summit of the BRICS bloc, which consists of developing economies. The Kremlin is hosting the event with specific goals in mind. It hopes to use the summit as a platform to challenge what some see as the Western liberal order.

For Russian President Vladimir Putin, the three-day meeting that began on Tuesday provides a key opportunity to demonstrate the failure of U.S.-led efforts to isolate Russia. These efforts stem from its 2022 war against Ukraine.
Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov praised the summit as “the largest foreign policy event ever hosted” by Russia. It includes participation from 36 countries, with more than 20 represented by heads of state.
BRICS initially included Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining later. The group has since expanded to welcome Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have formally applied for membership. Additionally, several other countries have shown interest in joining the bloc.
