CPLP Hosts a Meeting to Revamp Visa Policies and Foster Dialogue

CPLP convenes a technical meeting to discuss visa changes and encourage dialogue. The Secretary of the CPLP confirmed that potential changes to the Mobility Agreement, signed by all nine member states in July 2021, are anticipated, reported by Público on May, 28th.

Speaking to Lusa Agency, Zacarias da Costa emphasized that he had no “official information about the so-called official suspension of CPLP visas.” He also had no contact from Luís Montenegro’s government regarding the changes announced by the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, and, “strictly speaking,” he didn’t need to be.

The executive secretary assured that any changes are foreseen in the Mobility Agreement signed by the nine member states in July 2021 at the organization’s Summit of Heads of State and Government in Angola.

On May 13th, José Cesário announced that entering Portugal would be more demanding for CPLP immigrants, requiring proof of subsistence in the country.

“The agreement does allow the host State to require proof of means of subsistence for issuing a visa, under its own legislation,” said the executive secretary.

“But it also allows this proof to be simplified, requiring only the signature of a term of responsibility by a citizen or resident of the host State, which is accepted under current Portuguese law for citizens of other CPLP Member States,” explained Zacarias da Costa.
